Comcast Foundation rewards Mass. graduating seniors
June 23, 2009
Comcast honored 105 graduating high school seniors from across Massachusetts at a state house ceremony Tuesday with $1,000 scholarships from the Comcast Foundation, the charitable arm of the broadband cable provider.
Nationally, 1,879 high school seniors received $1,000 Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarships this year, including 170 from New England. In the nine years since the program began, Comcast has awarded $11 million in college aid to 11,000 scholarship winners.
"Each year, we are excited to provide Leaders and Achievers scholarships to talented students who demonstrate leadership in school activities and a strong commitment to community service," said Steve Hackley, senior vice president for Comcast's Boston region.
This year's honorees are catalysts for positive change in their communities and schools, participating in a wide variety of community service activities, such as mentoring and tutoring younger students, volunteering at hospitals and domestic violence shelters and delivering and serving meals to the homeless and hungry.
Community organizations throughout Massachusetts, including Cell Phones for Soldiers, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, Project Bread's Walk for Hunger and Big Brothers Big Sisters, have benefited from the service and leadership of this year's recipients.
