Comcast offering wideband service in Pittsburgh region
May 18, 2009
Comcast said it is launching Docsis 3.0 - the next generation of high speed internet service known as wideband - in Pittsburgh and parts of West Virginia, Ohio and Maryland.
The wideband service will double online speeds for residential subscribers on its Performance tier at no additional cost, the company announced.
The Extreme 50 service, at 50 megabytes per second (Mbps), costs $139.95 a month for a residential customer. The Ultra service, at 22 Mbps of download speed, will cost $62.95, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
For residential customers, the extra speed means faster downloading speeds for music, movies and other streaming data.
"With this next generation of service, our customers' online experience is dramatically enhanced," said Linda Hossinger, senior vice president of Comcast's Three Rivers region.
Cable operators such as Comcast hope Docsis will give them an edge over competitors who send internet service over fiber-optic lines.
Based in Philadelphia, Comcast has been rolling out the higher speeds in markets across the state, including Harrisburg; and in other parts of the country, the Post-Gazette reported.
