Comcast premiering 4G wireless network in Portland
June 29, 2009
Comcast Corporation, the broadband cable and internet provider, will launch its 4G high speed wireless data service Tuesday in Portland, Oregon. The company plans to roll out Comcast High-Speed 2go in three other cities by the end of the year.
Comcasts said its High-Speed 2go provides the fastest available wireless internet in the nation via wireless data cards. Comcast will be selling the service bundled with one or more of its internet, phone and television products.
Cathy Avgiris, senior vice president and general manager for wireless and voice services at Comcast, said the service will be offered in one of two service packs - Metro or Nationwide.
Comcast High-Speed 2go Metro comes with a 4G data card giving customers service solely within the 4G metro coverage area. The nationwide service couples coast-to-coast access on Sprint's national 3G network with 4G access in the 4G Metro area.
The $49.99 Fast Pack Metro service includes Comcast's 12 Mbps home internet service, a free WiFi router for mobility and extended coverage in the home and 4G service that will provide up to 4 Mbps download speed when customers are on the go. For an additional $20 per month, consumers can upgrade to the Fast Pack Nationwide service.
