Comcast says Boston not a 'wasteland' for high speed internet
July 21, 2009
A comment by Boston's mayor and a subsequent editorial in the Boston Globe suggested that the city has a dearth of quality options for fiber-optic high speed internet. Not so, shot back internet service providers Comcast and RCN.
Last week, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said on a radio program that Verizon was refusing to offer its fiber-optic high speed internet services through FiOS to Boston residents because of Menino's effort to change a law exempting internet providers from paying taxes on their equipment.
That prompted the Globe to editorialize that "the city remains a fiber-optic wasteland," saying Comcast and RCN "don't offer the speedier fiber-optic connections in Boston.
In response, Comcast regional vice president Steve Hackley wrote the paper to say that Comcast has been using fiber-optics to deliver video, voice, and high speed internet services to Boston for years.
RCN also wrote the paper to say that it offers high speed internet, cable and phone services over fiber-optic lines.
For its part, Verizon denied that it has not offered FiOS in Boston due to taxes "or any other issue."
