Comcast says internet TV plan will protect cable model
March 25, 2009
Comcast's senior vice president of online entertainment Karin Gilford said the company plans to unveil its On-Demand Online product to allow cable TV subscribers to watch cable programming online.
As consumers move their media consumption online, cable companies like Comcast are working to provide premium content online in a way that protects the economic model of the industry.
Gilford made the statement at a panel discussion ahead of this week's National Association of Broadcasters' (NAB) futures summit.
Comcast's On-Demand Online service is what the company hopes will convince consumers that paying for content by subscription is still the best way to get movies and other programs, she said.
"There's fantastic programming available from premium channels and basic-cable channels," most of which is not currently available online, Gilford said, according to Multichannel News.
At the NAB futures summit, company executives are gathering to discuss strategiesfor accommodating to new technologies, mobile devices, and wireless in their product offerings.
The NAB said broadcasters must make smart, strategic decisions to succeed and position their companies for the future.
