Comcast to launch U.S. Olympic Network
July 9, 2009
The U. S. Olympic Committee (USOC) and Comcast Corporation have announced an agreement to form the U.S. Olympic Network (USON), the first-ever cable television network devoted solely to the Olympics.
USON, which will premiere in 2010, will be broadcasting year-round and on multiple platforms, including television, video on demand and online, with Comcast high speed internet users having access to Olympics news, highlights and event coverage.
Viewers will be able to watch live coverage of championship competitions and, after 2012, exclusive Olympic trial events. Coverage across platforms will include news reports, commentary, interviews from the locations of future Olympic and Paralympic Games and classic Olympic footage on demand, for thousands of hours of programming.
"The U.S Olympic Network will be a dream come true for fans of the Olympic Games, delivering rich year-round content associated with the world's greatest sporting competitions," said Stephanie Streeter, acting CEO of the USOC.
For consumers, USON could be an example of the type of cross-platform programming Comcast is hoping to bring through what it calls TV Everywhere, with more TV content coming to viewers online through their Comcast high speed internet connection.
