Could Comcast buy up Time Warner Cable?
September 10, 2009
A stock analyst from Citigroup has published a note saying Comcast should merge with Time WarnerCable, setting off speculation about interest in a deal to consolidate cable TV and broadband internet subscribers.
Last month, former Disney CEO Michael Eisner speculated in an interview that Comcast may be building up its reserves for a major deal, saying he expected Comcast was looking to buy either Time Warner or Viacom.
"Comcast won't just be sitting there; they may want to recapture their dreams of going after Disney, but not with Disney specifically," Eisner told Broadcasting & Cable. "And I am sure [Comcast executives] Brian Roberts and Steve Burke have Time Warner high on their computer screens."
An appeals court ruling in favor of Comcast late last month paved the way for Comcast to acquire more cable subscribers, as the court disposed the 30 percent subscriber cap established by the Federal Communications Commission.
The ruling means Comcast will be able to expand market share, which could lead to greater efficiencies in service - or less competition for consumers.
