Cox planning to start wireless phone service this year
April 10, 2009
Cox Communications, the third-largest cable operator in the U.S., is preparing to launch a wireless network this year, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The move would put Cox in the company of other telecoms such as Verizon and AT&T that are bridging the gap between broadband cable, high speed internet and wireless services.
Stephen Bye, vice president of wireless at Cox, would not say how much the company has spent to build its wireless service, but said the company is forging ahead with its plans despite the recession, the newspaper reported.
Cox plans to offer cell phone service wireless broadband access for laptops in its markets across the South and Southwest, the article reported.
Bye said Cox plans to offer a bundle of TV, broadband and cell phone service once the wireless network is complete. Bye said the company can use its experience in cable to grow the mobile video market, according to the paper.
Cox is also considering a mobile-software store along the lines of Apple's store for the iPhone and similar initiatives, Bye told the paper.
The company had purchased $550 million worth of wireless spectrum in the Federal Communication Commission's wireless auctions, CNET reported.
