Discovery Channel joins Comcast's TV over broadband internet trial
August 13, 2009
Comcast Corporation today announced that Discovery Channel has joined the technical trial of On Demand Online, which the broadband internet and cable provider plans to roll out to make TV content available on the internet for its subscribers at no extra charge.
Discovery Channel's content will be made available to approximately 5,000 trial participants online for the first time beginning this week, including full length episodes of series like Man vs. Wild and the world premiere series Swords the day after they air on television, along with past episodes of Storm Chasers and episodes of Verminators a week after airing.
On Demand Online is part of a plan by Comcast and Time Warnercable, along with other cable content providers, to compete with free video services online.
Bill Goodwyn, president of domestic distribution for Discovery Communications, said joining the trial provides fans of the network's shows more options to see programming whenever and wherever they want.
"The initial response we have received from customers participating in the On Demand Online trial has been overwhelmingly positive," said Matt Bond, executive vice president of content acquisition for Comcast.
Discovery Channel is the 24th network to join On Demand Online, which already includes channels such as HBO, CBS, TNT, TBS, Starz and Cinemax.
