European soccer finals streaming online through Verizon

April 9, 2009

Fans of the world's most popular sport, soccer, can now take the game with them wherever they go, as Verizon and ESPN360.com announced an agreement to host online coverage of the quarterfinals, semifinals and the final for the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League.

The UEFA Champions League playoffs will kick off in April and May exclusively online via the ESPN360.com network. The agreement with Verizon means the matches are also available at no extra charge as part of Verizon Online's lineup for Verizon FiOS Internet and Verizon High Speed Internet subscribers.

"Now our broadband customers also can enjoy some of the best soccer competition in the world as teams from across Europe battle for the 2009 Champions League title," said Shawn Strickland, vice president of Verizon marketing.

ESPN360.com said its offering delivers up to 20 simultaneous live events and gives consumers control over their broadband sports-viewing experience, providing television-quality video and the ability to pause, rewind and fast-forward live events.

In addition to the UEFA tournament games, ESPN360.com is the online home for all major FIFA World Cup events, UEFA EURO, Football League (U.K.), Carling Cup, Italian Serie A, Portuguese Liga Sagres, U.S. National team, the World Football Challenge and many top domestic leagues from around the globe, the company said.
