FCC workshops focus on participation, technology of broadband internet
July 31, 2009
The Federal Communication Commission's initial public workshops in preparation for the National Broadband Plan will focus on ways government can be improved by broadband internet and how technologies will effect broad deployment of broadband.
The first workshop, scheduled for August 6, will raise topics such as how access to broadband might support the goals of more open and accessible government, while other workshops scheduled for next month will raise the topics of deployment and adoption of broadband internet.
Increasing demand for access to mobile broadband internet presents just one of the many challenges to the development of a comprehensive plan. One workshop session will consider how the currently planned 3G, 4G, and WiMax technologies will handle demand and if additional spectrum can be used.
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said the workshops encourage public participation and dialogue, as the FCC "is trying to develop a comprehensive and meaningful record for the development of the plan."
The public is invited to use the web site to suggest additional topics or revisions to those now slated for discussion at the workshops, which begin on August 6 and run through September 3. A detailed list of topics for upcoming FCC staff workshops has been posted at broadband.gov.
