FiOS bringing web applications to 'social TV'
July 15, 2009
Verizon FiOS TV customers can now connect to friends on social networks such as Facebook through their TV sets, using newly launched widgets from the Widget Bazaar applications marketplace, located within FiOS TV's Interactive Media Guide.
Due to the popularity of social networking and online video services that are blurring the distinction between broadband internet and cable TV, Verizon has worked with social media innovators Facebook Connect, Twitter, ESPN, Veoh, blip.tv and Dailymotion to create a converged internet-to-television experience.
FiOS TV subscribers can post to their Facebook page, see others' Tweets and connect while watching TV, plus search and view a variety of online, personal PC-based videos on their television screens. Verizon also plans an open development platform to permit developers to write interactive FiOS TV applications, the company said.
The Widget Bazaar app store, located within FiOS TV's Interactive Media Guide, is launching with free Facebook, Twitter and ESPN Fantasy Football Widgets.
Later this month, customers who subscribe to the Home Media DVR service will have access to a video feature that will allow them to search and view videos from blip.tv, Dailymotion and Veoh, right on their FiOS TV.
