Gen Yers prefer smart phones over PCs

Baby Boomers and Generation Y are different animals in their tastes, habits and attitudes. A recent survey on consumer electronics preferences shows that the younger generation prefers handheld devices - smart phones - over traditional computers.
According to the survey, conducted by technology consulting firm Accenture, 50 percent of Boomers prefer computers over other consumer technology products, while 27 percent prefer smart phones, PC World reported.
But among Gen Y (people 18 to 24 years old), 51 percent prefer smart phones and only 22 percent prefer the old desktop or laptop computers.
"As the mobile platform evolves, it's going to become a more important terminal to the corporate network than the traditional laptop," Accenture's Kumu Puri said, according to PC World. "With Gen Y, as they grow up in the workplace, it will be a lot more about the mobile platform, which is a pretty big difference from where most enterprise applications are used today."
Businesses looking to keep up with the younger generation of workers have already been issuing smart phones to employees who simply need access to their work email.
Business technology experts said corporate smart phones could be a lower-cost alternative to company laptops, particularly given the current economic climate.
