High speed internet users can measure bandwidth on Netgear router
July 21, 2009
Netgear plans to introduce a router next month that will allow consumers to measure how much bandwidth they use for high speed internet as well as on wireless devices throughout their home.
This could be a handy device for consumers who use a lot of bandwidth and worry about coming up against limits set by their high speed internet provider.
Netgear said it will include metering capability as a standard feature on all its future routers, according to a report in the Associated Press.
Comcast has set a bandwidth cap at 250 gigabytes per month, which is more than most users need. However, when Comcast introduces its On Demand Online service, which will offer movies and TV shows online from broadcasters including Time Warner Cable for cable and high speed internet subscribers, it could create bandwidth problems.
Households with more than one PC could easily end up using more than 250 GB, according to TGDaily.com, whose reporter asked whether Comcast will drop its bandwidth limit for On Demand Online.
On Demand Online will initially be offered only on a trial basis for about 5,000 Comcast customers. The company has not said how it will proceed with rolling out the service to all of its customers.
