Hulu web video site brokers new content deals
May 8, 2009
Hulu, one of the most popular sites on the internet for viewing television content, has signed agreements to show international content, according to a report from the Financial Times.
The video service was launched last year by NBC Universal to provide an alternative to YouTube, the most popular video sharing site.
The new licensing agreement with British and Indian companies will provide an international flavor on Hulu, with shows that have never been shown before inside the U.S.
Web video has presented cable operators with the challenge of competing against free content. Some providers, like AT&T, have launched web-based subscription TV services.
Last week, Walt Disney signed on to provide some of its content to Hulu alongside NBC and Fox. The companies have arranged a revenue-sharing plan, according to the Financial Times.
Disney will begin posting episodes of popular ABC shows like Lost, Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives.
Another web videoservice, TV.com, recently announced that it has rolled out a TV.com iPhone app, according to paidConent.org.
As of yet, Hulu does not offer its service for mobile devices.
