In YouTube video, FCC Chairman Genachowski talks about broadband plan
September 10, 2009
In a web video posted to YouTube and the Federal Communications Commission broadband blog, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski addressed the National Broadband Plan and his vision for the FCC's role in telecommunications policy.
Genachowski said the idea of openness and participation from regular consumers is driving the process of getting views on the broadband initiative and other key aspects of the nations communications infrastructure - from cell phones to wireless broadband.
The FCC needs to be a "21st century agency for the information age," Genachowski said, appropriately using technologies like YouTube and web sharing to promote participation and sharing of information.
Data collection is another aspect of Genachowski's vision to take advantage of expertise and information to improve service.
"We have launched a data review at the FCC looking at the data the FCC collects," Genachowski said. "Is there data that we should be collecting and were not? Are we collecting data we don't need?"
He also said the FCC is looking at the issue of spectrum and whether it is deployed efficiently to boost innovation and investment in wireless. The FCC's "control of spectrum should be used to ensure the best investment in wireless infrastructure throughout the U.S.," he said.
