Internet sites celebrate 9-09-09 as day without cats
September 9, 2009
Something about repeating dates like today's 9-09-09 makes the internet crazy. To celebrate the date, the website Urlesque is organizing "a day without cats."
As Urlesque explained, the internet makes funny pictures and videos of cats not only possible, but websites hosting them like Lolcats.com have their own corner of the web staked entirely on pictures of cats.
Cat fans who might object to the ban get this admission from the writers at Urlesque: "Why only one day? Well let's be honest, that's probably only as long as we'll last before a hilarious video comes crashing into our inbox. But for one day, we will abstain - for you - for the cats."
Like any trend on the internet, there is a backlash to be expected. The day without cats has been banned by some lolcat-loving websites - like Icanhazcheezburger - which launched an all day, all cats event to protest.
It might be a tough day for Sockington, the cat from Waltham, Massachusetts with more than 1 million followers on Twitter.
Today, Sockington tweeted that "there is no cat in the ceiling and excuse me he is not watching me do anything."
