LG crowns National Texting Champion on Tuesday
June 15, 2009
Handset maker LG Electronics MobileComm USA (LG Mobile Phones) will crown the winner of its third annual LG U.S. National Texting Champion on Tuesday that will net the winner $50,000.
LG concluded a national promotion in May to find 22 finalists, known as the Text Titans, who have competed in over 250,000 game plays involving online Facebook challenges, wild card play that utilized SMS texting and competitions on MTV.
A brutal assortment of speed games pared down the competition to three finalists, who will square off for the final thumb wars Tuesday in New York City. Ultimately, the top two finalists will compete for the jackpot prize, LG said.
Ehtisham Rabbani, vice president of marketing for LG Mobile Phones, said contestants will be "pushed to the limit," as they fight to win the $50,000 purse.
The LG U.S. National Texting Championship began in 2007, when contestants battled each other for $25,000 in cash and prizes. Nathan Schwartz, a 20-year-old Clyde, Ohio resident, took home the title and $50,000 in prize last year.
Although texting is a fast and popular way for people to communicate, some physicians have expressed concern that too much text-messaging can lead to thumb injuries or addiction, according to the New York Times.
