Mobile apps and games popularity booming
May 4, 2009
AT&T wireless customers are increasingly using mobile applications (apps) and games, as a survey showed 57 percent of them play mobile games on their wireless devices.
More than 50 percent of AT&T mobile gamers polled said the games served as a distraction from daily life issues, while 40 percent said they gamed for relaxation and stress relief, the company said.
Mobile gaming is poised for growth in 2009, with one-third of AT&T mobile gamers saying they were "somewhat or very likely" to purchase a game for their cell phone in 2009.
"Adoption of mobile games continues to grow, but conversion rate (free to paid players) remains low," said Michael Cai, vice president of video games research at Interpret LLC, a media research and analysis firm.
AT&T also released the top performing apps based on new sales from January through March, when the company's wireless data revenues grew 39 percent year-over-year.
"Mobile applications help customers customize their handsets and better utilize the capabilities of their devices," said Mark Collins, vice president of voice and data products for AT&T.
The three top performing apps of the first quarter were AT&T Navigator (a GPS application); AT&T Mobile TV; and Napster Mobile.
Some of the more popular mobile games include Tetris, Bejeweled and Guitar Hero World Tour.
