Mobile broadband revenues to grow 450 percent by 2014
March 30, 2009
The explosion of growth in mobile broadband use is expected to generate revenues of $137 billion by 2014, a growth rate of 450 percent, according to a report by research firm Ovum.
Broadband carriers such as Verizon and AT&T are investing billions to expand their third-generation (3G) mobile networks with technologies that allow access to the internet on 3G-enabled handsets like the iPhone and on small laptops intended for internet browsing called netbooks.
According to Ovum, the fastest growth is expected to occur in emerging markets in Asia, mainly because of the lack of fixed broadband services.
Western Europe and North America, where fixed line connections are more broadly available, would see slower growth in mobile broadband adoption.
Ovum said the rapid growth in mobile broadband usage will not mean more profitability for service providers, due to the high cost of adding more users and more data traffic, resulting in declining average revenues per user.
Broadband service providers are also developing technology for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) deployment, a faster wireless broadband infrastructure that can deliver up to 70 megabits per second bandwidth.
