Mobile broadband surging with smartphone popularity
June 16, 2009
A wide range of options in the smartphone market, from the iPhone to newer offerings such as the Palm Pre and BlackBerry Curve, is driving consumer adoption of mobile broadband at breakneck speed.
Online music, video and gaming company MyMojo said this week that smartphone adoption is driving increases in the number of downloads consumers are making on their wireless devices.
"We've seen incredible spikes in mobile content consumption, as more people gain access to smartphones and web-enabled devices," said John Ferber, CEO of MyMojo.
The company said traditional mobile content like ringtones and wallpapers still heavily outpace downloads for mobile video and other content, but games and applications have increased to 9 percent of all downloads while video downloads grew to 4 percent.
As Congress considers tighter regulation of the wireless industry, Verizon Wireless is citing the growing diversity of consumer options as evidence that wireless providers don't need government interference to protect consumers from rate gouging.
Randal Milch, Verizon executive vice president and general counsel, said U.S. wireless consumers enjoy some of the lowest overall prices per minute globally and benefit from the most competitive market.
"Wireless innovation is breathtaking, investment has been massive and prices have relentlessly decreased overall," Milch said.
