Mobile broadband users consume more media
May 12, 2009
Users of mobile internet on their smartphones spend about 30 percent more time with media than the general population, according to a new survey.
People who access the internet from mobile devices are also more likely to have made a purchase online and have higher incomes and travel more on business than other consumers, according to the survey by Knowledge Networks.
Only about 11 percent of the U.S. population now accesses mobile internet or video weekly, the survey said. But these users are major consumers of all types of electronic media.
The past-week users of mobile internet or video spend 12 percent more time per day watching TV than the general population - even though TV represents a lower share of their total daily media consumption.
The mobile media group also devotes 75 percent more time on the internet than the general population.
Mobile internet and video users spend more time with video games than they do with newspapers and magazines combined, according to the survey.
Newspapers' share of media consumption by both the general population and mobile internet users is just 3 percent and 2 percent, respectively.
