New York trains may get wireless broadband internet
July 15, 2009
The New York State Metropolitan Transportation Authority is exploring options for adding wireless broadband internet access to commuter trains on the Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road lines.
The MTA has asked for proposals from broadband internet providers and has not committed to any plan, but this should be welcome news for the millions of commuters who take the train to work daily in the greater New York metro area.
Free Wi-Fi broadband internet is already available to passengers on the commuter rail lines of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, which began in December 2008 offering the free service on at least two cars in every train on its 13 separate commuter lines to and from Boston.
Several other transportation systems in the U.S. and in Europe are implementing or have operational wireless broadband internet service on their trains.
The next big thing will be Wi-Fi access on airlines. Virgin Atlantic already offers broadband internet service for its passengers and Delta, American and United airlines are working quickly to deploy Wi-Fi for domestic flights, USA Today reported.
AirTran Airways announced this week that it has become "the first major airline" to offer wireless broadband internet service on all of its flights.
