North Carolina unveils high speed internet map
July 10, 2009
State leaders including Representative Bill Faison joined high speed internet providers, North Carolina Farm Bureau and Connect North Carolina to unveil the state's first accurate broadband inventory map showing the extent of broadband services.
The Connect North Carolina map shows that broadband service is currently available to 92 percent of North Carolina households through land-based or fixed wireless technology. This leaves approximately 241,000 North Carolina households without high speed internet access.
Faison said the map should help the state to secure broadband stimulus funding to support the roll out of high speed internet to underserved areas. Stimulus funds totaling more than $7 billion will be awarded to the states based on the creation of accurate mapping of broadband penetration.
North Carolina Farm Bureau is partnering with Connect North Carolina to provide rural leadership that ensures that every farm family and rural household has the ability to connect to high speed internet services.
A recent study by Connected Nation found that improved broadband access could result in a total economic impact of $3.6 billion in North Carolina.
