Qwest boosts broadband internet upload and download speed
July 20, 2009
Internet service provider Qwest has announced that it is doubling the downstream speed of its broadband internet services to 40 Mbps and will increase its upstream speed to 20 Mbps using next-generation VDSL2 broadband internet technology.
Qwest said the new offering for residential and small business customers will be rolled out initially on a limited basis in cities including Denver, Tucson, Salt Lake City and Minneapolis/St. Paul.
Qwest plans to introduce the faster services to select areas within 23 markets, including markets in New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Washington.
"Faster download speeds are important, but upload speeds are getting more attention," said Neil E. Cox, executive vice president of Qwest product and IT.
"By increasing connection speeds in both directions, Qwest is poised to support user-generated content and simultaneous high-bandwidth applications, like multiple online video streams and downloads or multiple players of online video games," Cox added.
The 40 Mbps downstream with 5 Mbps upstream package will be available starting at $99.99 a month and connection speeds of 40 Mbps downstream with 20 Mbps upstream will start at $109.99 a month for the first 12 months when combined with a qualifying home phone package.
