Qwest offers Dell netbooks to high speed internet subscribers
August 10, 2009
Internet service provider Qwest has begun offering Dell Inspiron mini netbooks for $199 to new subscribers to its high speed internet service and to existing customers who upgrade service.
The offer, good through September 30, is yet another attempt by an ISP to attract customers with offers of a popular netbook - the cheap, low-power laptops designed primarily for connecting to the internet. Verizon and AT&T also have netbook offers.
Customers are required to sign a two-year contract for high speed internet service of 7 Mbps or higher and must also sign up for Windows Live and home phone service to qualify for the deal, which is $100 off the regular price for the Dell netbook.
Netbooks are becoming more like an alternative to smartphones like the iPhone, acting as a lightweight platform for accessing mobile broadband internet. Qwest subscribers get free access to Wi-Fi hotspots in coffee shops, bookstores and other locations.
The Dell Inspiron Mini 10 has a 10.28" x 7.19" screen and a smaller keyboard that is about 92 percent the size of a regular laptop keyboard. It weighs just 2.5 pounds and has up to 1GB memory.
