Satellite broadband internet? Company says it helps rural areas
September 16, 2009
Rural areas of the country that don't have access to wireline broadband internet may need to adopt over-the-air technologies to gain access to high speed internet services. Some companies are offering broadband over satellite as a solution.
Satellite internet delivers the internet at download speeds up to 30 times faster than dial-up and is available where cable and DSL aren't, according to WildBlue Communications.
The U.S. government has recognized the need for broadband access in rural communities. The economic stimulus package recently passed by Congress allocated around $7 billion towards bringing high speed broadband access to rural areas of the country.
The expansion of satellite internet could make broadband access easy and affordable for the millions of Americans who are unable to get high speed internet.
High speed satellite internet is easily installed in most homes. Professional installers mount a mini satellite dish on the roof, outside wall, or a pole in the ground. A cable from the dish connects to a satellite modem.
HughesNet, another satellite broadband provider, said it plans to introduce a next-generation, high throughput satellite in the first quarter 2012 that can deliver speeds of 100 Gbps.
