Study finds huge growth in mobile-friendly websites
April 2, 2009
The number of websites featuring content that is designed to be viewed on mobile handsets and cellular phones shot from 150,000 last year to 1.1 million, according to a new study.
Mobile company dotMobi, which created the domain .mobi specifically for locating content that works on all mobile phones - said the results of its survey of top internet domains shows that "a revolution in mobile content availability is at hand."
The company said it searched for websites with mobile-friendly internet address designations from Top Level Domains (TLDs) in use like .mobi, mobile. or /wap, where mobile-friendly content is likely to be found. Other popular addresses include /m, mobile. and m.
Of all the websites across the World Wide Web, approximately 0.8 percent of all domains are likely to have mobile-friendly content. VeriSign estimates there are approximately 77.4 million live .com and .net websites.
Of the 1.1 million mobile sites used by content creators, the .mobidomain is the preferred entry point for sites that use a single naming convention, at 23 percent of these addresses, dotMobi said.
"Site owners and consumers need a single naming convention to resolve the market confusion in finding mobile content that works on all phones, not just high-end smartphones or iPhones," said the company's Amy Mischler.
