Study: internet TV to take off within a few years
October 2, 2009
A study by business auditing and consulting firm Ernst and Young says that a hybrid of TV and the internet could become the dominant paradigm within the next few years.
Ernst and Young assert in the study that large numbers of consumers consider the marriage of internet and TV an appealing idea, but the many attempts to hybridize the two media have produced what can only be called uneven results. The study projects, however that sales of web-connected TVs will boom from less than half a million this year to over six million by 2013.
The study singles out widgets, or small-scale applications that run on internet-enabled TVs as the spark that will send the concept's sales skyrocketing. Widgets can display weather information, enable online shopping, or perform any one of a number of functions to enhance a viewer's experience. Experts caution, however, that some advertising models will have to be reworked in order to properly function in any TV-internet hybrid.
Recent technological advances, like Intel's new system-on-a-chip designed to integrate with TVs, set-top boxes and DVD players, could also help spur sales of hybrid systems.
