Time Warner Cable signs deal for Samsung Tru2way boxes
July 7, 2009
Time Warner Cable and Samsung announced yesterday that they have signed a letter of commitment for the continued deployment of Samsung True2way enabled set-top boxes, which lets cable operators deliver interactive TV applications similar to web applications.
Five of the biggest U.S. cable operators - Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Cablevision Systems and Bright House Networks - committed last summer to deploy Tru2way across their entire footprints by July 1, 2009, a deadline the companies all missed, according to Multichannel News.
But Time Warner Cable said it has already deployed more than 2 million Tru2way boxes to date and plans to work with Samsung to continue the roll-out of interactive TV.
"We have been a leader in the roll-out of Tru2way devices and we are continuing to grow our relationship with Samsung, a CE company dedicated to the development of new equipment meeting the necessary standards and offering attractive feature sets," said Mike Hayashi, executive vice president of advanced engineering for Time Warner Cable.
Thomas Rhee, SVP for Samsung, said the company's Tru2way cable set-tops include devices that function as High Definition DVRs.
Time Warner Cable and Samsung also recently signed an agreement on collaborating in development of better home networking solutions for entertainment to allow users to link their computers, TVs and other devices.
