Time Warner offering WiMax broadband internet this fall
July 30, 2009
Time Warner Cable will begin offering the newest wireless broadband internet technology, called WiMax, to its high speed internet subscribers beginning in the fall. Time Warner plans to initially offer WiMax in four cities, a company executive said.
On a conference call Wednesday to discuss the company's quarterly earnings, Time Warner CEO Glenn Britt said he sees wireless broadband internet as complementing wireline service, which is why the company will partner with WiMax provider Clearwire in the fall.
"Nobody that I've talked to thinks that anytime soon wireless is going to be able to beat the wireline capacity, both in terms of speed and throughput," Britt said, according to the Associated Press. "So we think the two will complement each other and that's why we're interested in what we're doing with Clearwire."
WiMax offers internet speeds over a wireless connection in areas that may not be reached by cable or DSL and offers better speed than traditional Wi-Fi.
Comcast uses the WiMax standard to offer 4G wireless broadband internet in its High-Speed 2go Metro service, which it has premiered in cities including Atlanta, Las Vegas and Portland, Oregon.
