Tough cable, wireless competition leads Qwest to try new approach
August 31, 2009
Qwest Communications, the country's third-largest cable provider, announced today that Teresa A. Taylor has been named chief operating officer, replacing Thomas E. Richards, who is leaving the company to become president and chief operating officer of CDW Corporation.
Industry analysts pointed out that Qwest, which also provides broadband internet for residential and business customers and digital phone services, will be dropping its wireless service and directing subscribers to sign up with partner Verizon Wireless.
In the poor economy, broadband subscriber growth has slowed and phone subscribers are dropping landlines in favor of cell phones.
Qwest's landline subscribers fell by 11 percent in the second quarter from a year earlier, according to Dow Jones. The company is putting its focus on delivering faster high speed internet for consumers.
Edward A. Mueller, chairman and CEO of Qwest, said Taylor is a veteran executive at Qwest who is "well-equipped to step into the COO position and allow us to continue our intense focus on the daily operations of the company and our goal of perfecting the customer experience."
