April 23, 2009

Americans went in search of financial advice and affordable travel arrangements and increasingly were drawn to the social media site twitter.com in March, according to data compiled by comScore.

Twitter.com more than doubled its visitor base, ranking as the top-gaining web property for the month, comScore reported.

"Twitter has certainly become an internet phenomenon over the past few months, but March represented an especially big gain for the site as it added more than 5 million visitors versus the previous month," said Jack Flanagan, executive vice president of comScore Media Metrix.

Americans were also going to search engine sites like Google and Yahoo to find information about finances, as websites in the financial advice category received a 12 percent bump in traffic, the company said.

Bankrate.com websites, which provide rate information on mortgages, credit cards and money market accounts, reported a 12 percent increase to 3.9 million visitors.

Travel arrangements sites also received more hits in March, as Americans prepared for spring and summer travel. Related travel industry sites like car rental and airline websites each grew 11 percent during the month.

Broadband providers, high speed internet and wireless were also popular categories, as websites from AT&T, Verizon and Comcast ranked in the top 25 most popular destinations.
