U.S. broadband and DSL speeds increase while prices stay level
June 5, 2009
Consumers are getting even faster high speed internet for about the same price, as broadband internet providers hunt for business by making their offerings more attractive, according to a new report.
The report from research company Point Topic said the services that operators are offering have slowly increased in speed and some are cutting prices as well - although mostly outside of the U.S.
Fiona Vanier, senior analyst at Point Topic, said speeds have been gradually increasing as the cable providers and telecoms have been faced with more demanding consumers.
As a result, the price per megabit has dropped by 20 percent for fiber, 30 percent for cable and 37.5 percent for DSL in the past year, she said.
However, the price that consumers pay on their monthly internet bill is largely determined by how competitive their market is. In many parts of the U.S., only one cable or internet provider has a monopoly.
In the UK, which benefits from the lowest broadband prices, some film industry groups have been asking for ways to slow down internet speed to prevent illegal downloads of movies.
