U.S. CTO says iPhone points to higher mobile broadband demand
June 12, 2009
Aneesh Chopra, Chief Technology Officer in the White House, said Thursday that growing demand for mobile broadband for devices such as the iPhone should spur more private investment in broadband infrastructure.
Speaking before a meeting of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) in New York, Chopra discussed how the technology industry's entrepreneurial spirit can improve economic growth, healthcare, energy policy and educational excellence.
He also said the federal government aims to create incentives for business investment in infrastructure to provide faster connections and greater access to high speed internet through broadband deployment.
Chopra noted that the incentive for business investment in faster wireless networks did not exist pre-iPhone, but consumer demand has surged, creating a case for better technologies.
"If there are applications that will drive demand, the market will respond with a business case to invest," he said, according to Reuters.
CEA economist Shawn DuBravac and CEA director of industry analysis Steve Koenig noted several hot trends in the consumer electronics industry, including 3D HDTV, internet TV and netbooks.
DuBravac discussed the increased importance of interactivity and viewer engagement in the television experience and how television shows and user generated content are the two most popular forms of online content.
