June 2, 2009
The growing popularity of broadband internet and social networks for children, teens and young adults has also meant more exposure to risks from computer viruses, identity theft and online predators.
And as the school year comes to an end, more children could have unsupervised access to the web. Verizon announced that it is offering a suite of security products and simple preventative measures to help parents.
Verizon's Family Center website provides links to online tools for parents, educators and kids. In addition to free internet parental controls, the Verizon Family Center provides insight on cyber bullying, access to tools such as family-safety contact lists and a family-safety contract.
"The growing involvement of the internet in our day-to-day lives dictates that we take steps to protect our families and our personal information when we are online," said Bill Heilig, vice president for Verizon corporate marketing.
Verizon Security Advisor, a free software tool, provides an instant diagnosis of a PC's security status and detects whether essential antivirus, antispyware and personal firewall protections are in place.
Verizon's Internet Security Suite offers consumers a comprehensive suite of security products for up to three personal computers for a monthly fee of $5.99, Verizon said.
