Verizon announces area code overlay in Southern California
April 15, 2009
A new area code will go into operation in the current area served by 818 numbers beginning April 18, meaning landline and digital phone customers with 818 numbers will have to dial the number 1 and the area code when dialing.
Verizon Wireless said the new area code 747 will occupy the same region of Southern California's San Fernando Valley as the 818 area code, in order to allow for new telephone lines and services for this growing region.
The 818 Public Education Program (818 PEP) participants, a consortium of landline and wireless telecommunications providers in cooperation with the California Public Utilities Commission, offered tips on making sure area customers' calls go through.
Only calls from landline phones must use 1 plus the area code plus the phone number.
The new dialing procedure will not change existing 818 phone numbers or the cost of the call, Verizon said. Calls that are in a consumer's local calling area remain local calls.
Dialing 9-1-1 and other three-digit numbers like 411 will be unaffected.
Customers are reminded to reprogram automatic dialers on machines such as fax machines, alarm and security systems.
Phone numbers with the new 747 area code may be issued beginning May 18, 2009.
