Verizon tests 4G mobile broadband network in Boston and Seattle
August 14, 2009
Verizon Wireless today conducted its first successful Long Term Evolution (LTE) fourth generation (4G) data call in Boston and earlier completed a similar test in Seattle, the company announced. Verizon is hoping to launch its LTE 4G mobile broadband network in 30 markets in 2010.
The successful data calls involved streaming video, file uploads and downloads and Web browsing and Verizon has also successfully tested Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) to enable voice transmissions over the LTE 4G network.
Tony Melone, senior vice president and chief technical officer at Verizon Wireless, said the mobile broadband network uses prime spectrum in the 700 MHz range to make "ubiquitous, highly mobile, super-fast broadband experience a reality for customers."
Boston and Seattle each now have 10 LTE 4G cell sites up and running, which Verizon is using for trials with its LTE 4G network partners to assess how to add the new technology to the network.
Verizon said it plans to have a full nationwide LTE 4G network implemented by 2013.
Other carriers are working to implement 4G mobile broadband networks using different technologies. Comcast is licensing a technology called WiMax to offer 4G network access to its customers in Atlanta, Portland, Oregon, Baltimore and Las Vegas.
