Verizon Wireless to sell netbook computers
March 30, 2009
Verizon Wireless is preparing to enter the popular netbook market, according to several media reports. The company has not confirmed the rumors, but a source told Bloomberg news the company wants to compete with the netbook offering of rival service provider AT&T.
AT&T sells Acer Netbooks for $99 with service through RadioShack and Dell Mini Inspirons through its website site.
Bloomerg reported that Verizon Wireless has been in talks with more than one PC maker, but price and other details arent complete, according to an unnamed person familiar with the plan.
Verizon's parent company, Vodafone, has had an agreement in place since September to sell Dell Netbooks in Europe, according to a report on CNET.
Netbooks are relatively inexpensive laptop computers configured for wireless internet connections and are the fastest-growing category of PCs. Microsoft and other netbook sellers shipped 10 million of them in 2008, or 7 percent of all laptops.
Smaller than typical laptops, netbooks are easily transportable and having the ability to access the internet from anywhere makes them a hot item.
