Web browser wars: Which one is best for high speed internet?
August 14, 2009
Microsoft's Internet Explorer is by far the most popular, but there are several other web browsers available for high speed internet users. Now, the New York Times is reporting that Netscape founder Marc Andreessen plans to introduce a new web browser aligned with Facebook.
Andreessen, whose Netscape browser was crushed by Microsoft when it released Internet Explorer embedded in its Windows products, told the Times that he is working with former business partners on a browser called RockMelt.
Not much else is known about the new browser, or how it would work with Facebook, which Andreessen is involved with as a board member.
Web browsers, which allow high speed internet users to surf the web, include a mix of products like Safari, Firefox and Chrome as well as Opera, which is popular in Europe.
A recent test sponsored by Microsoft showed that Internet Explorer 8, the newest version, outperforms other browsers in detecting websites that host viruses that can harm a user's PC.
The second-most popular browser, Firefox, came in second in the security test. Many users prefer Firefox for its online privacy settings and use of tabs and add-ons, while Google claims Chrome to be the fastest browser.
