White House cybersecurity plan earns praise
June 1, 2009
President Obama's proposals to increase the security of U.S. computer networks, which he outlined in a speech last Friday, received praise from high speed internet providers and others in the IT industry.
"President Obama and his administration recognize the key role that industry will have in working with the government to ensure a secure, reliable and trustworthy cyber infrastructure," said Peter Davidson, senior vice president of federal government relations for Verizon.
Davidson said Verizon is committed to working in a collaborative fashion with the government to ensure that America's information and communications infrastructure is secure.
Verizon's experts provided insight into operational, technical and policy issues in support of the White House policy review, he said.
Obama will soon announce his nominee to fill a new cybersecurity coordinator position in the White House, a high-level adviser who will report to the national Security Council and the National Economic Council.
The decision to give the White House central control over cybersecurity was praised by some and criticized by others.
"This position has been long overdue," said Mandeep Khera, CMO for web application security firm Cenzic. "It's great to see the commitment that President Obama has given to cybersecurity."
