April 23, 2009
CTIA-The Wireless Association yesterday announced its support for a standard format for wireless phone chargers, known as the Universal Charging Solution (UCS). All new wireless devices will be compatible with the new format by 2012.
For the cell phone manufacturers, the plan could lead to reduced research and development costs and lower manufacturing costs, according to InformationWeek.
The association announced its support for the format on Earth Day, saying UCS will use the Micro-USB format as the common universal charging interface and use energy efficient that will provide an estimated 50 percent reduction in standby energy consumption.
"Earth Day serves as a great reminder that the wireless industry and all of us have a role to play when it comes to taking care of our planet," said Steve Largent, president and CEO of CTIA-The Wireless Association.
The UCS planwas first introduced in February and backed by wireless companies like AT&T, LG Electronics, Motorola and other major manufacturers, InformationWeek reported.
Last November, the major cell phone manufacturers announced a common energy rating system for chargers to enable customers to choose the most energy-efficient charger, according to the news source.
