Wireless association survey shows growth trends
April 1, 2009
The Wireless Association announced today the findings of its semi-annual industry survey, as wireless data service revenues for the year 2008 rose to more than $32 billion, a 39 percent increase over 2007.
Wireless data revenues for 2008 were about 22 percent of all wireless service revenues and represent what consumers spend on non-voice services, including SMS (texting), multimedia messages (MMS) and mobile internet use.
According to the survey, more than 1 trillion text messages were carried on networks in 2008, for about 3.5 billion messages each day and nearly three times the number of texts sent in 2007. Wireless customers also sent more pictures and videos through their mobile handsets, with 15 billion MMS messages reported for 2008, up from 6 billion in 2007, the survey found.
More than 87 percent of the U.S. population uses wireless services, or about 270 million subscribers, showing how integral these services have become, said Steve Largent, president and CEO of CTIA - the Wireless Association.
"The wireless industry consistently evolves, innovates, competes and grows every year at a rapid pace and 2008 has carried on this remarkable trend," he said.
The survey also found that wireless customers used more than 2.2 trillion minutes in 2008, an increase of 100 billion minutes from 2007.
