Philadelphia is Going Wireless
Wireless Philadelphia
Philadelphia is about to become the only completely wireless city in the country. Wireless Philadelphia, a non-profit organization started by Major John Street, just entered into their final round of negotiations with Earthlink, the Internet service provider that will be connecting the entire city of Philadelphia with a wireless connection.
The vision of Wireless Philadelphia is for the city to have Internet access in every city neighborhood so that every Philadelphia resident will have an equal opportunity to use Internet technology.
How Wireless Cities will Benefit Residents
Having Internet access in every neighborhood of any given city will certainly help everyone involved. Citizens, businesses, schools and community organizations will all benefit immensely from this type of project, allowing everyone to have an equal opportunity to stay educated and informed with a broadband connection.
Cost
Connecting to the Internet will be cheaper than ever with Wireless Philadelphia, which not only means that bills in the typical household will be lower, but it also means that people who would normally not be able to afford Internet access, will now have the opportunity to do so. Some hot spots, such as in selected parks and public areas, will actually be free of charge to connect to the Internet - which is also a perk for travelers and visitors to the city.
When Will the City Go Wireless?
The negotiations are underway between the city of Philadelphia and Earthlink. It is expected that the Wi-Fi connections throughout the city will be implemented in late 2006.
