Working Mother Magazine Names Verizon to List of 100 Best Companies

September 30, 2008

By Mike Peters

For the eighth consecutive year, Verizon has been named to Working Mother magazine's list of 100 Best Companies for Working Mothers. Verizon is the only telecommunications or cable company on the magazine's list which recognizes companies that have family-friendly benefits and policies which help working mothers strike a balance between their work and personal lives.

"Verizon knows that their investment pays for itself through employee loyalty, and they realize that productivity depends as much on satisfied staffers as on smart processes," said Suzanne Riss, editor-in-chief, Working Mother magazine. "By helping employees manage their work/life demands, Verizon is creating a highly motivated workforce."

Verizon Company Policies and Benefits Help Working Mothers

The company's application to the Working Mother 100 Best Companies list for 2008 included data from Verizon's largest business groups: Verizon Telecom, Verizon Business, and Verizon Wireless. Working Mother magazine's 100 Best Companies are selected based on an extensive application with more than 500 questions addressing workforce, compensation, child care, flexibility programs, leave policies, and more. The publication also checked the usage, availability, and tracking of programs, as well as the accountability of managers who oversee them. Seven areas were measured and scored: workforce profile, compensation, child care, flexibility, time off and leaves, family-friendly programs, and company culture.

Working Mother Recognizes Verizon's Family-Friendly Policies

For this year's list, the publication gave particular weight to family-friendly policies, flexibility, leave policies, and benefits for part-timers. Verizon received its highest ranking in the areas of compensation, benefits, job-guaranteed time off for childbirth or adoption, and the company's health and wellness programs.
